What It Means to Be Seen: Our First Feature in Westchester Magazine
Set Forth NY’s first press feature arrived during the month Karen marks her mother’s passing. A reflection on recognition, remembrance, and staying rooted in why the brand began.
There is something quietly powerful about being seen.
Not in the sense of sudden attention or overnight recognition, but in the experience of hearing someone else describe your work and realizing they understood what you were trying to say.
This July, Set Forth NY was featured in Westchester Magazine.
The timing carried another meaning for me. July is also the month I mark my mother’s passing, and her memory is part of why this brand began.
Seeing the story of Set Forth NY written by someone outside the business was emotional in a way I did not expect.
Not because the feature gave the brand its purpose or made the work valid.
The purpose was already there.
The feature reflected it back to me.
What Westchester Magazine reflected back
When I first poured wax into a matte black tin in my New York apartment, I did not know whether anyone would understand a candle brand that spoke openly about grief, remembrance, transition, and beginning again.
Set Forth NY was never meant to be only about fragrance or decoration.
It began with a belief: light does not disappear, even in grief.
A candle does not create that light. It reflects what is already present within us.
The Westchester Magazine feature recognized that there was a story behind the objects we make. It understood that the candle comes after the person, the memory, and the reason for lighting it.
Reading that description reminded me that the quieter parts of a brand can still be understood.
They do not always need to be made louder.
They need to be expressed clearly and honestly.
Why this month matters
July holds several layers for me.
It now holds the memory of our first press feature.
It also holds the anniversary of losing my mother—the event that eventually led me to the ritual of lighting a candle in her memory.
I do not need to turn the timing into a sign to understand why it stayed with me.
The feature arrived during a month when I was already thinking about her.
It brought recognition and remembrance into the same space.
It reminded me that something can grow from a deeply personal beginning without leaving that beginning behind.
Set Forth NY has changed since the first candle was poured, but the belief beneath it has remained the same.
The brand does not ask people to move on, become someone new, or find an answer.
It offers presence and a place to stay with what matters.

Recognition without changing the reason
Press coverage can introduce a small business to people who may not have encountered it otherwise.
It can help a story travel beyond the people already close to the brand.
But it does not determine the value of the work.
The Westchester Magazine feature did not tell me what Set Forth NY was.
It showed me that someone had listened closely enough to describe what we had been trying to express.
Being seen, in this sense, is not simply being praised.
It is being understood.
That distinction matters.
A brand can receive recognition without changing its language to appeal to everyone. It can remain grounded in its reason for existing, even as more people begin to notice it.
That idea also sits at the center of the first entry in this series, Not Everyone Will Get It — And That’s Okay.
Not every person will connect with Set Forth NY in the same way.
The work is not weakened by that.
The responsibility is to speak clearly to the people who recognize themselves within the belief.
To the people who have made room for this brand
This feature belongs within a much larger story.
It includes every person who has taken time to read about why Set Forth NY began.
Every person who has chosen a candle for a transition, gathering, remembrance, or quiet evening.
Every person who has shared the brand with someone else.
Every conversation at a market, every thoughtful message, and every story shared with us has helped us understand where Set Forth NY belongs.
Not at the center of someone’s experience.
Beside it.
The candle is not the source of the meaning.
The meaning already belongs to the person, memory, relationship, or moment being acknowledged.
We are grateful whenever Set Forth NY is allowed to remain nearby.
Where we are headed
This feature is a milestone, but it is not a destination.
It is one marker within the continuing story of the brand.
We will keep speaking honestly about remembrance, life transitions, belonging, and the ordinary rituals people return to.
We will keep placing belief before product.
We will keep making candles that can remain beside celebration as well as absence, beginnings as well as remembrance.
And we will keep listening to the people who share why they chose to light one.
Thank you for seeing Set Forth NY.
More importantly, thank you for allowing us to stay beside the moments that matter to you.
